Understanding Job Boards

There are many places for individuals with PhDs or those seeking to work in academia to find employment. Examples of places to find this type of work could be the American Historical Association (AHA), Chronicle Vitae by The Chronicle of Higher Education, Academic Positions, The Uni Jobs by Times Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and H-Net. However, not all job boards are created equal. H-Net breaks throughout the mold as a resource that operates as an international interdisciplinary organization comprised of scholars and teachers—the very people who use the sight as well. As a non-profit, H-Net does not sell advertisements to external sources, nor does it have external partners to source job postings from, both of which are the norm among many of the other academic job resources that are available to job seekers.

Resources such as The Versatile PhD and Sell Out Your Soul Blog indicate that there is a trend among PhD holders to look for non-academic jobs. This trend is further explored in Dr Nathalie Mather-L’Huillier’s article “Non-Academic Careers for PhD holders”, which claims that less than half of PhD holders in the UK end up finding careers in academia. Mather-L’Huillier asserts that many countries are producing more PhD holders than the academic workforce can cope with, and that a main challenge these individuals face is being surrounded by supervisors and peers that have known no other career path than working within academic. In Jennifer Polk’s piece “What Can I Do With a Ph.D. in My Discipline Outside Academe?” she argues that PhD’s are not what intrinsically get applicants hired, but that the relevant skills and professional work experience that candidates have because of their PhDs are what make them desirable to potential employers.
